In Sabah, a Pakistani individual was apprehended by a team of officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDN) on suspicion of unlawfully possessing 108kg of white sugar, a controlled item under Malaysian law. Georgie Abas, the state director of KPDN, disclosed that the arrest took place during Ops Tiris following a tip-off from the public.

The discovery was made at 10:27 am in a residential area in Likas, where the sugar was found concealed inside a four-wheel drive vehicle within a house compound. The total value of the seized sugar and vehicle amounted to RM50,307.80. The case is currently under investigation pursuant to the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and the Control of Supplies Regulations 1974.

Georgie Abas emphasized the importance of consumer vigilance and urged the public to report any instances of misuse or unauthorized possession of controlled and subsidized items to the relevant authorities. He encouraged individuals to share information with any KPDN branch or utilize various reporting channels, including WhatsApp hotlines, email, phone, and the Ez Adu KPDN app.

This incident underscores the government's commitment to combatting illegal activities related to controlled items and ensuring compliance with regulations aimed at protecting consumers and maintaining market stability. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies and vigilant citizens plays a crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of the supply chain and preventing unauthorized trade practices.

The public's active participation in reporting suspicious activities contributes to the effective enforcement of laws governing controlled items, thereby deterring illicit practices and preserving the welfare of consumers. By remaining vigilant and proactive, individuals can contribute to creating a fair and transparent marketplace where the rights of consumers are upheld and protected.

The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs remains steadfast in its efforts to uphold consumer rights and maintain the integrity of the market. Through continued vigilance and collaborative efforts, authorities aim to curb illegal trade practices and promote fair competition, ultimately fostering a conducive environment for economic growth and consumer welfare.
