LABUAN: Two-term Member of Parliament here Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman said he decided to return to contest in Labuan to help revive its economy.

He contested in 2004 and 2008 under Umno and won on both occasions.

Suhaili did not elaborate on the economic issues affecting the island but the local economy had been sluggish these past years, especially following erosion of the free port status.

During the recent Youth Career Programme held by the Labuan Youth and Sports Department, 3,000 applied for 83 vacancies. The Prime Minister during his recent visit here acknowledged that Labuan’s development was slow even though the island has been a financial hub for a long time.

The PM asked the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) to look at the overall development of the island under the Labuan Economic Development Blueprint 2030.

This plan includes emphasis on O&G and tourism sectors.

Suhaili who is with Perikatan Nasional is facing five challengers, including from Umno and Warisan’s Datuk Rozman Jali who also won the elections here twice.
