RAWANG, Aug 4 — There is no regulation preventing the candidacy of Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) chief Hasnal Rezua Merican Habib Merican to represent Barisan Nasional (BN) in Kuang in the Selangor election, said BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The deputy prime minister said he had reviewed with lawyers the nomination of Hasnal.

“There is not a single regulation that bars (the nomination) and I have referred it to our lawyers,” Zahid said during a talk at Bandar Tasik Puteri, Kuang, tonight.

He said a Suhakam leader is well suited to fight for justice as a BN candidate.

Hasnal will face incumbent Sallehudin Amiruddin (Independent) and Mohd Rafiq Abdullah (PN-Bersatu).

Zahid said he thinks Suhakam should support Hasnal, but said it would be appropriate for Hasnal to withdraw from the rights body to focus on serving the Kuang people.

The BN chairman said he is not satisfied with unity government party campaigns for the six state polls.

The deputy prime minister said he will visit the six states with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to greet the machinery and voters.

Polls in Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah, Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan on August 12 will be held simultaneously with the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election, with early voting set for August 8.
