A day after a woman allegedly attempted suicide by jumping into the Kali Bein along with her two minor sons, resulting in the death of both children, the Sultanpur Lodhi police have registered a murder case against the mother and arrested her.

According to police sources, the incident occurred when the woman, identified as Simrat Kaur, allegedly took her two sons to the Kali Bein after getting them relieved early from school. The deceased children have been identified as six-year-old Veerpratap Singh and three-year-old Gurpratap Singh.

The children’s father, Bharpoor Singh, told the police that there had been frequent domestic disputes in the family. He claimed that he had made repeated efforts to resolve the issues, but matters could not improve due to interference from his in-laws’ family.

He further stated that he himself had dropped the children at school in the morning before leaving for seva at Gurdwara Baoli Sahib in village Dalla. He alleged that later his wife brought the children from school to the Kali Bein, where she first drowned both the children and subsequently jumped into the water herself.

However, local residents who noticed the incident managed to rescue the woman, while both children had died by then. Station House Officer of Sultanpur Lodhi police station, Inspector Harinder Singh, said that on the basis of the statement of the deceased children’s father, the police have registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC against Simrat Kaur on charges of murder.

He said the accused woman has been arrested and further investigation is being carried out after obtaining her police remand.
