In an impassioned address, His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak called for immediate action to contain the misuse of racial and religious issues in Malaysian politics. He warned that the manipulation of these sensitive topics for political gain is not only divisive but poses a direct threat to national unity.

Speaking during his 68th birthday celebration at Istana Iskandariah, Sultan Nazrin urged leaders to act before the escalating rhetoric ignites an irreversible conflict among Malaysians. “When religion and race are used as tools for political leverage, provocative rhetoric and slogans disguised as religious passion start to dominate public discourse,” Sultan Nazrin stated. He stressed that such language, unchecked, could act as “sparks” capable of setting off a larger “blaze of animosity.” He cautioned that failing to address these issues risks turning diverse communities against each other, ultimately devastating the fabric of Malaysian society.

Sultan Nazrin’s message highlighted the need for wise, unbiased leadership that fosters unity rather than exploiting cultural and religious differences. He urged leaders to cultivate an environment where Malaysians can appreciate diversity without prejudice or suspicion. “Amid sensationalized issues of religion and race, it is essential that leaders embody a sense of wisdom and prudence,” he added, emphasizing the importance of instilling a sense of ease among people rather than fear or division.

He also addressed the growing trend of individuals who undermine Malaysia’s royal institution, seeing it as a vital link between tradition and modernity. Sultan Nazrin affirmed that the monarchy’s role transcends constitutional obligations, serving to preserve Malaysia’s rich heritage and to connect contemporary society with its cultural and historical foundations. He warned that those who openly dismiss tradition and decorum as obsolete are undermining the very core of Malaysia’s identity.

Furthermore, Sultan Nazrin called on citizens to stand against cultural and moral erosion. He warned against the influence of individuals and groups that lack a deep respect for customs, stating that “their misguided intellect” and disrespect for traditional values risk alienating Malaysians from their heritage. “We must reject actions that trample on the principles of good manners and decorum,” he insisted, calling for a collective effort to defend Malaysia’s cultural roots.

The Perak Sultan also addressed the need for balance in the nation’s power structure. According to Sultan Nazrin, a democracy can only thrive when there is a balanced distribution of power across the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches. He cautioned that concentrating power in one institution leads to a weakened government, often resulting in power abuse, social division, and civil unrest. “To sustain democracy, we must prioritize a system of checks and balances,” he said.

Sultan Nazrin reminded Malaysians that the country was built on unity and cooperation among various ethnic, religious, and linguistic communities. Even after six decades of independence, the journey to social maturity and true unity continues. He urged both leaders and citizens to set aside differences and find common ground, aspiring toward a more harmonious Malaysia.

As Sultan Nazrin concluded, he called on Malaysians to reject selfish interests and the prejudices that come with them, emphasizing that unity is a foundational principle.

His message serves as both a warning and a rallying cry for Malaysians to protect the country's diversity and harmony from divisive forces that could undermine it.
