Sultan of Selangor calls for integrity and due process in judicial appointments

HIS Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor has called for judicial appointments to be carried out with utmost transparency, legal precision, and respect for constitutional processes, warning against speculation and unwarranted commentary in sensitive matters of national governance.

Presiding over the 269th Meeting of the Conference of Rulers on 16 July 2025, following the pre-council meeting held a day earlier, the Sultan expressed gratitude for the smooth proceedings.

“Alhamdulillah, I offer thanks to Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala as the meeting was able to proceed smoothly and effectively,” His Royal Highness said statemen posted on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page.

The meeting addressed, among other key matters, the appointment of several high-ranking judicial positions, including the Chief Justice, President of the Court of Appeal, and the Chief Judges of Sabah and Sarawak.

“In this consultation process, I emphasised the need to comply with all legal provisions, particularly Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, which outlines the procedure for the appointment of senior judges in the superior courts,” said the Sultan.

His Royal Highness also expressed full support for the statement released by Istana Negara on 10 July 2025, which reaffirmed the constitutional role of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in judicial appointments.

“I fully support the statement from Istana Negara dated 10 July 2025, which affirmed that His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong may appoint the Chief Justice, the President of the Court of Appeal, and other key judicial officers upon the advice of the Prime Minister and after consulting the Conference of Rulers,” he said.

“The process provided under the Federal Constitution must be carried out transparently and with due diligence, in order to safeguard the sovereignty of the law and uphold the principles of justice that are fundamental to the nation’s governance,” the Sultan added.

His Royal Highness also urged restraint from the public and political actors alike in commenting prematurely on judicial matters.

“All parties are urged to avoid engaging in speculation or making negative accusations without obtaining complete and verified facts regarding any issue,” His Majesty added. - July 17, 2025
