In a firm reprimand, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has criticized Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang for his recent disrespectful remarks towards the Malay Rulers. The Sultan's private secretary, Dato’ Muhamad Munir Bani, issued a letter dated February 27, which was uploaded to the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, conveying the Sultan's displeasure.
The letter, addressed to Selangor PAS commissioner Datuk Abdul Halim Tamuri, highlighted Hadi's social media post on February 20. In this post, Hadi reminded Malay Rulers, MPs, state assemblymen, judges, and lawyers to prioritize spiritual matters over worldly interests. The Sultan found this statement inappropriate and uncivilized, especially concerning Malay cultural norms of respect towards the Malay Rulers.
Moreover, the Sultan expressed concern over Hadi's criticism of judges for allegedly failing to interpret the Constitution based on Islamic principles. These comments, according to the Sultan, could confuse and divide society, particularly Muslims. Munir also referenced past instances where Hadi had issued statements challenging royal decisions, indicating a pattern of disrespect towards Malay Rulers.
The Sultan emphasized that Hadi should be mindful of his words, especially regarding matters that could sow discord among Muslims. He reminded Hadi of the Sultan's remarks during the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) meeting on February 15, where the Sultan called for enhancing state assemblies' competency to enact Shariah laws under the Federal Constitution.
The Sultan's stance on upholding Islam's sanctity and empowering Shariah Courts was reiterated, emphasizing the importance of unity among Muslims. Munir also highlighted the historical involvement of Malay Rulers, political parties, and religious bodies in negotiating Malaysia's Constitution, questioning Hadi's motives for questioning its supremacy.
In conclusion, the Sultan urged all politicians to respect Islam and refrain from exploiting it for political gain. The letter served as a reminder of the Malay Rulers' duty to protect Islam and the need for respectful discourse on matters concerning the faith.
