
Sultan and Tengku Ampuan of Pahang express condolences to family of Prof Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas, honouring his legacy in Islamic scholarship
KUANTAN: The Sultan and Tengku Ampuan of Pahang have expressed their condolences on the passing of renowned scholar Prof Diraja Tan Sri Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas.
In a Facebook post, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah conveyed their sympathies to the late professor’s family.
They prayed for his soul to be placed among the faithful and the righteous.
The royal couple also hoped the family’s affairs would be eased and that they would remain steadfast following their loss.
The post described Al-Attas as a distinguished scholar who contributed greatly to knowledge.
He was recognised as the founder of the concept of Islamisation of knowledge, which significantly influenced modern Islamic educational thought internationally.
Throughout his academic career, he produced dozens of scholarly works spanning various fields.
These included philosophy, history, theology, literature, and Islamic civilisation.
Among his influential works were ‘Islam and Secularism’, ‘The Concept of Education in Islam’, and ‘Prolegomena to the Metaphysics of Islam’.
These texts have become important references for scholars worldwide.
The Pahang Royal Court noted his major contributions in upholding Islamic scholarly traditions.
His work also strengthened Malay-Islamic intellectual discourse, making him one of the region’s most influential thinkers.
Syed Muhammad Naquib, the founder and director of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC), passed away at 6.47 pm yesterday.
