Just today (19 June), Sultan Selangor announced that the state assembly will be dissolved on 23 June to pave the way for the upcoming state elections at the end of this month.
Elections mean campaigns, and campaigns mean convincing the people to cast a vote for a party. In his Facebook post this afternoon, Sultan Selangor has a friendly reminder to all politicians who are set to attend campaigns and mingle around with the people.
“Be responsible, don’t touch on sensitive issues”
Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj reminded all politicians to run their campaigns responsibly by following all the rules, and not to raise any sensitive issues, particularly racial and religious which may create havoc and ruin the peace in Selangor.
The reminder does not only go to the politicians but Sultan Selangor took the opportunity to remind the supporters too.
“Candidates and supporters are not to insult, spread slander and pit against opponents when campaigning to avoid division among the people of the multi-ethnic state of Selangor.”
In the meantime, Sultan Selangor also revealed that he will be away to London on 23 July for surgery and is scheduled to return home on 15 August.
“If conditions allow, I will return home earlier than scheduled.”
It seems that the His schedule for the months ahead will be packed as Sultan Selangor is also expected to be away on 20 June to perform Hajj prayer in Mecca, and is expected to return home on July 4.
Elections are due in six states this year: Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Kedah, and Terengganu. Kelantan has said that its state assembly will be dissolved on June 22, while the Penang government is seeking to dissolve its assembly on June 28.
We hope that all politicians and supporters, regardless of the parties will stick to the rules and behave in a civilised manner to prevent any unwanted consequences.
