In a special message delivered on the eve of Merdeka Day, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, expressed his deep concern about the ongoing use of divisive communal politics by certain political leaders. He warned that this practice poses a serious threat to the unity and stability of Malaysia, urging leaders to cease their harmful rhetoric.

The Sultan highlighted his longstanding appeal to politicians to refrain from sowing discord among Malaysians, emphasizing that his calls have been largely ignored. Despite his repeated efforts to foster harmony, some leaders continue to engage in negative political strategies that pit different communities against each other, which he deems detrimental to the nation's fabric.

"I have consistently advised leaders and politicians to avoid engaging in hate politics; however, this destructive culture persists among some," Sultan Sharafuddin stated. He reiterated that he would not waver in his stance, stressing the importance of embracing Malaysia's diversity as a strength rather than a source of division. The Sultan urged all Malaysians to use their differences to build a more respectful and inclusive society.

In his message, Sultan Sharafuddin also cautioned the public against discussing sensitive issues related to race, religion, and royalty often referred to as the "3R" topics in a manner that could lead to discord. He emphasized the need for responsible discourse to prevent these issues from being manipulated for political gain.

The Sultan expressed his disapproval of public criticism directed at the constitutional monarchy, particularly when it comes to the institution's role in upholding the principles of parliamentary democracy. He stressed that the monarchy should remain above political disputes and that any feedback or criticism of the government and the royal institution should be expressed through appropriate channels and with careful consideration.

"Criticism or feedback against the government and the royal institution should be voiced through the proper channels and carried out with prudence," he asserted.

This call for restraint comes in the wake of a recent incident involving Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who was charged with sedition over remarks he made about the previous Yang di-Pertuan Agong during a campaign speech for the Nenggiri by-election. The Sultan's message serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining respect for Malaysia's constitutional monarchy and the principles it upholds.

Furthermore, Sultan Sharafuddin encouraged younger Malaysians to reflect on the true meaning of Merdeka, urging them to recognize that it is more than just an annual celebration on August 31. He warned of new forms of colonialism that are spreading globally through technology, particularly on social media, and encouraged the youth to remain vigilant against these modern threats.

As Malaysia marks another year of independence, Sultan Sharafuddin's message serves as a timely reminder of the need for unity, respect, and a deeper understanding of the values that underpin the nation's independence. His call for an end to divisive politics and his emphasis on responsible discourse underscore the importance of preserving Malaysia's social harmony for future generations.
