5.7-magnitude quake near Langsa, Indonesia felt in PJ, Kajang, Klang; no tsunami threat to M’sia.

PETALING JAYA: Several parts of the Klang Valley experienced mild shaking on Wednesday following a moderate earthquake in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the 5.7-magnitude quake struck at 12.18pm, with its epicentre located 55km southwest of Langsa, Indonesia, at a depth of 10km.

In a Facebook update, the department confirmed that the tremors were felt along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

A number of social media users described feeling the shaking in areas such as Petaling Jaya, Kajang, Puchong, Klang and Selayang.

This is not the first instance of a Sumatran earthquake being felt in Malaysia. In March, a magnitude 6.5 quake off North Sumatra’s west coast triggered tremors across several northern states in the peninsula, with authorities confirming no tsunami risk at the time.

A similar episode occurred in February 2022, when a 6.1-magnitude earthquake in the same region prompted the evacuation of residents in high-rise buildings across the Klang Valley and Melaka.
