New lineup
With the newest form factor of the Galaxy Fold first. Samsung is actually reorganizing the Fold lineup, as this new shorter but wider one is the new Galaxy Z Fold8. The existing lanky one is going to be called the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.
Galaxy Z Fold8
The Galaxy Z Fold8 has a 7.6-inch screen when unfolded, and this screen has an aspect ratio of 4:3. Yes, a 4:3 aspect ratio. The reason why Samsung opted for this aspect ratio is because of content consumption – and I have to agree, because you really do have less black bars compared to the lanky Fold’s aspect ratio. Plus, we can also do double brainrot in parallel and send reels to our friends non-stop.
Even reading books on the unfolded display is actually rather enjoyable. I’m using the Google Play Books app because that’s my go-to ebook reader app, and I can split the view like this and read books this way.
When folded, the Google Play Books app will also automatically transform back to single-page view. The outer display is obviously way wider compared to the lanky Ultra. I’m not sure apps will respond to this kind of wider aspect ratio, but I do know that using the phone one-handed is basically impossible now. It’s just impossible to reach to the far end of the screen.
The entire Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs in at 201 grams only, and it is also packed with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, has a 4,800mAh battery with 45W of wired and 20W or wireless fast charging, and also only has two cameras – one main 50MP f/1.8 and another ultrawide 50MP f/1.9.
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra
Now, it’s time for the lanky Fold that we all know. Samsung is rebranding this form factor as the “Ultra”, and this new foldable is officially called the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. It basically looks and feels very similar to the previous Galaxy Z Fold7.
Of course, there are many upgrades and fine-tuning done throughout the entire device. It now only measures at 4.1mm when unfolded, has a titanium alloy film below the flexible OLED panel for support and flatness, and also added a titanium plate for stability.
One of the cameras got a change – and that’s the ultrawide. It got upgraded to a 50MP sensor, and that’s about it. All the other cameras – including the selfie cameras on both the unfolded and cover display remain the same.
Speaking of that, the display is now 15% brighter, it’s now 13% clearer due to higher PPI, but the display size and aspect ratio remain the same as the Z Fold7.
Oh – Samsung did mention it now has an antireflective display – which is a nice touch for sure.
The new Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra also has a total of 5,000mAh battery now – finally, and it will also have the same charging speed as the Fold8, so 45W wired and 25W wireless fast charging. The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is also powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, just like the new stubby Z Fold8.
New foldable features
With the arrival of One UI 9.0, the new foldables also will come packed with new features. I’ll just mention all of them here since there’s no demonstration. Now Nudge has been updated to automatically enter split view while the device is unfolded, so if Now Nudge shows you a calendar entry or whatever, tapping on it will immediately open the calendar at the side.
Now Nudge can now also set a reminder and pin to map as well. Also, notifications can now promp Now Nudge – so we can add things that way.
Galaxy Z Flip8
It’s now time for the flippy boi! There’s actually not much changes done here in terms of the hardware. It looks the same, feels the same, but now weighs at 180g and measures at 6.1mm thin only. The bezel on the cover display is shrunken down to only 1.25mm, which makes it look so beautiful.
Other than that, the Z Flip8 is basically the same as before. We do have a lot of software upgrades – like Now Brief for the cover display is now changed, has a bunch of personalized insights, recommended actions, automation for daily routines, and also show a progress bar for deliveries and stuff like that.
We also have the Horizontal Lock feature for videography – and basically that’s it.
Sweeping changes
Samsung did mention to us that people have been saying the phone is not that easy to unfold. So, Samsung made sweeping changes to all the foldables, actually.
To make it easier to unfold, there is now a bit more curvature so that we have more material to grip and unfold. The hinge and magnets that hold both parts together are now not as strong as before, but that means the angles at which we can use the device while in Flex Mode – as in this mode – is also way smaller. I left the Fold8 Ultra at around 110°-ish and the phone snapped open. So if you like the Flex Mode, then this is something that you’ll have to pay attention to.
