Sun Life exiting trust business to focus on insurance, mutual funds

SUN Life Philippines will discontinue unit investment trust funds (UITFs) and other trust products offered through its investment management and trust arm as it shifts resources toward its core insurance and mutual fund businesses.

"We believe we can best serve clients in the Philippines by focusing on our insurance and mutual fund businesses, where we have strong capabilities and opportunities to meet the evolving needs of Filipino Clients,” Sun Life Philippines Country Head and CEO JJ Moreno said in a statement on Wednesday.

The insurance firm said Sun Life Investment Management and Trust Corp. (SLIMTC) would undergo a planned and orderly transition, with the decision reflecting its assessment of its long-term strategy in the country.

Moreno said the company regularly reviews its businesses to “ensure they remain aligned with client needs, market conditions, and our long-term strategy.” “Throughout this transition, our priority is to protect client interests, maintain service continuity, and provide clear information on the options available to them,” he added.

Amid the transition, Sun Life will continue offering insurance and wealth accumulation products through Sun Life of Canada (Philippines) Inc. and mutual funds through Sun Life Asset Management Company Inc.

UITFs are pooled investment products managed by trust entities, while mutual funds are investment vehicles managed by investment companies. Although both allow investors to participate in a diversified portfolio, they operate under different regulatory frameworks.

Sun Life said it would continue offering a broad range of insurance solutions and mutual funds to help clients meet their protection, health, income, wealth accumulation and legacy-building goals.

Affected clients will receive direct communications through official Sun Life channels explaining their available options, key timelines and sources of personalized assistance.

Sun Life encouraged clients to rely on official communications and consult their Sun Life advisers or customer support channels for guidance based on their individual circumstances.

To oversee the process, Sun Life appointed Sachi Pang, its special adviser to the country head and chief executive, as president of SLIMTC effective Sept. 23, 2026.

“Pang will help ensure that SLIMTC delivers on its commitments throughout the transition and that clients continue to receive the support they expect from Sun Life,” the company said.

Moreno reiterated that Sun Life remained financially strong and committed to the Philippine market, emphasizing that the transition would not change its commitment to serving clients through its continuing insurance and mutual fund businesses.

“We will continue to serve clients through our insurance and mutual fund businesses,” Moreno said.  “Throughout this transition, our priority is to ensure affected clients receive clear guidance, understand their options, and have the support they need.” As of June 30, 2026, Sun Life reported total assets under management of around $1.70 trillion.
