The Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, has highlighted a promising surge in the adoption of solar panels across residential areas nationwide. This encouraging trend has spurred the government to initiate quota applications for homeowners interested in installing solar panels through the Net Energy Metering (NEM) Programme this year.

While declining to provide specific figures, Nasrullah expressed optimism about the growing interest among homeowners in utilizing solar energy systems. The government's decision to open quota applications reflects its commitment to promoting renewable energy adoption at the residential level.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, previously announced the continuation of the NEM programme, with an additional quota offer of 100 megawatts (MW) for NEM People and 300 MW for NEM NOVA. This forms part of the government's Integrated Clean Energy program for the current year. The quota offer will be available until December 2024 or until fully allocated, with applications accepted from February 5 onwards through the eNEM system on the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) website.

The NEM programme aims to empower at least 25,000 domestic electricity consumers and 100 users in commercial and industrial sectors to harness roof space for electricity generation through the installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar systems, facilitating self-consumption.

Regarding the installation of solar systems at the Movenpick Hotel & Convention Centre KLIA, Nasrullah emphasized its significance, particularly within the hospitality industry. He commended the hospitality sector for embracing renewable energy solutions, viewing it as a positive step towards sustainable practices.

Nasrullah highlighted the symbolic importance of such initiatives, suggesting that by embracing solar energy, the hospitality industry sets a precedent for wider adoption, paving the way for future opportunities.

In conclusion, the government's commitment to expanding solar energy adoption through initiatives like the NEM programme signals a positive shift towards renewable energy utilization, not only in residential areas but also across various sectors, including hospitality. Such efforts contribute to Malaysia's broader sustainability goals and underscore the importance of collective action in combating climate change.
