Sungai Golok attack likely aimed at creating chaos, says deputy mayor

A DEADLY attack on a security control post in the Sungai Golok district of Narathiwat Province, Thailand, has raised concerns of escalating instability in the region.

Deputy Mayor of Sungai Golok, Apichet Jeh-Ouma, told Bernama that the attack was likely intended to create chaos in South Thailand.

The attackers, dressed in black and with their faces concealed, arrived in two vehicles and launched a violent assault, firing multiple rounds and throwing grenades.

The attack resulted in the deaths of two security personnel, identified as Muhamad Sabri Nasawan and Todsapon Paipim.

One of the victims succumbed to injuries at the scene, while the other passed away later in the hospital.

“We believe this attack was aimed at creating chaos. It’s especially heinous since it occurred just after Muslims had ended their fast," Deputy Mayor Apichet Jeh-Ouma said.

In addition to the fatalities, 12 others were injured, four of whom are reported to be in critical condition. They are currently receiving medical care at Sungai Golok Hospital.

As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, leaving local authorities and residents on edge.

The attack's proximity to the Malaysian border has also sparked concerns across the border in Rantau Panjang, Terengganu.

Trader Muhamad Redzuan Abdullah expressed his alarm, noting that the explosions and gunfire could be heard by locals in Malaysia, only three kilometers from the scene.

"At first, we thought it was just fireworks being set off by kids after breaking their fast. But when we learned it was an attack, I became very anxious," Redzuan said.

Local resident Jamilah Mohd Zain also voiced concerns, urging Malaysians who frequently cross into Sungai Golok for food during the fasting month to reconsider their plans.

"If there's no urgent reason, I would advise people to avoid going across for now. The situation isn't very peaceful at the moment," Bernama cited Jamilah saying.

In response to the attack, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has ramped up security measures along the Malaysia-Thailand border.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that strict controls have been imposed to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of residents, stating that the police will continue to closely monitor developments in Narathiwat Province until the situation is deemed safe. - March 9. 2025
