Five family members killed in a crash in Sungai Petani were buried in a common grave, while a seventh victim was laid to rest in Penang

SUNGAI PETANI: Five family members killed in yesterday’s crash involving a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a lorry at Kampung Baru Pinang Tunggal yesterday were laid to rest this morning.

Ahmad Shafiq Ahmad Shukri, 29, his wife Jamaliah Sannusi, 29, their two-month-old baby boy Ahmad Mikail, his mother Nora Mhd Husin, 55, and his younger brother Ahmad Fahim, 21, were buried in a common grave at the Jamek Al-Abidi Mosque Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Simpang Tiga Pasir, Merbok, at 10 am.

Earlier, the remains, which were brought from Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) in Alor Setar in four hearses, arrived at the mosque compound at 8.45 am.

The funeral prayer, led by Tanjung Dawai assemblyman Hanif Ghazali, was then performed in the presence of more than 200 people.

Meanwhile, another victim, Iskandar Affan Ibrahim, seven, Ahmad Shafiq’s nephew, was laid to rest at the Permatang Kuang Mosque Muslim Cemetery in Penaga, Penang, at about 2 am today.

In the 3.50 pm incident, a Proton X50 SUV carrying seven family members, on their way to Kampung Simpang Tiga Pasir, Merbok, was involved in a collision with a lorry.

Six victims were confirmed dead at the scene, while another victim, Ahmad Shafiq’s three-year-old daughter Aulia Sofea, sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment at the hospital.
