KUALA LUMPUR: Permanent repair works for subsidence along the Sungai Pulai Bridge route in Pontian, Johor, are scheduled to commence in July 2026.
The Works Ministry stated that the Letter of Acceptance for the contractor is expected to be issued that month.
The new repair design utilises a piling system method, finalised by the developer Seaport World Wide Sdn Bhd with engineering consultants. The developer must now submit a traffic management plan to the Johor Public Works Department for approval before work begins.
The subsidence issue was identified during a road acceptance audit in June 2023. The audit found the subsidence rate exceeded the permitted range by over 300mm, necessitating comprehensive repairs.
Several repair approaches were studied, including an Expanded Polystyrene system. A new method was ultimately proposed due to cost constraints.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan inspected the bridge on April 12 following public and state government concerns. The bridge has been confirmed as structurally sound despite soil subsidence detected at 10 locations.
The developer remains fully responsible for maintaining the bridge route until its official handover. This responsibility includes road cleaning, shoulder and drain maintenance, and grass cutting.
It also covers road patching, maintenance of road furniture, and street lighting. The ministry pledged to closely monitor the project to ensure compliance with technical standards and public safety.
The Sungai Pulai Bridge connects the Tanjung Pelepas Port area, Gelang Patah, and Tanjung Bin. It has been open to users since January 2023 as part of strategic infrastructure development in southern Johor.
