The recognition comes as SMC expands its paediatric services with the opening of Tower F, a dedicated 216-bed Children’s Tower designed to provide integrated and family-centred care.

SUNWAY MEDICAL CENTRE, Sunway City (SMC) has been ranked No. 1 in Malaysia for paediatrics in Newsweek’s World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027, marking the hospital’s first inclusion in the global ranking.

The hospital also received recognition for its oncology services, with the specialty highlighted among its areas of strength.

The recognition comes as SMC expands its paediatric services with the opening of Tower F, a dedicated 216-bed Children’s Tower designed to provide integrated and family-centred care.

Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long said the recognition reflected the hospital’s progress in paediatrics, oncology and neurology.

“The debut recognition in Newsweek’s World’s Best Specialized Hospitals ranking is a significant milestone for our flagship hospital, reflecting our advancements in paediatric, oncology and neurology in the region,” he said.

He said the paediatrics recognition was particularly significant as the hospital had recently opened its purpose-built Children’s Tower, which brings together paediatric subspecialty services, including paediatric haematology and oncology.

The facility is supported by a multidisciplinary paediatric team and forms part of SMC’s broader Children’s Health and Development Centre, which provides a range of paediatric subspecialties.

SMC also operates a 24-hour Children’s Walk-in & Emergency Department, a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and specialised inpatient wards.

SMC chief executive officer Erica Lam said the ranking reaffirmed the hospital’s focus on clinical excellence and patient-centred care.

“The ranking reflects the depth of our specialised clinical capabilities. With our newly opened Children’s Tower, patients now have access to an integrated and comprehensive ecosystem of paediatric care spanning consultations, diagnosis and treatment, supported by multidisciplinary teams,” she said.

Tower F was designed with children and families in mind, featuring age-appropriate furnishings, child-friendly environments and views of surrounding green spaces and attractions.

Besides paediatrics, SMC was ranked No. 1 in Malaysia for neurology and received recognition for oncology in the latest Newsweek ranking.

The latest recognition follows SMC’s fourth consecutive appearance in Newsweek’s Best Specialized Hospitals Asia Pacific 2026 rankings, where it received recognition across eight specialties, including paediatrics, oncology and neurology.

SMC was also ranked No. 1 in Malaysia in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals rankings in 2025 and 2026, and was named Malaysia’s top hospital in Newsweek’s World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2026 ranking.

As the flagship hospital of Sunway Healthcare Group, SMC has more than 300 resident medical consultants across 80 medical specialties and 28 Centres of Excellence.

Following the opening of Tower F, its licensed bed capacity has increased to 961.

The hospital is also the first private hospital in Malaysia to attain three major hospital-wide accreditations — the Joint Commission International (JCI) Gold Seal of Approval, Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) International accreditation and Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) accreditation.

According to Newsweek, the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027 ranking evaluates hospitals based on international peer recommendations from healthcare professionals, specialty-specific accreditations and certifications, and the implementation of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs).

The ranking covers 13 medical specialties and includes hospitals such as Mayo Clinic – Rochester, Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States.
