A “superfog” of smoke from south Louisiana marsh fires and dense morning fog caused a huge pileup of cars on Monday 23 October, killing at least seven people and turning Interstate 55 near New Orleans into a junkyard of mangled cars and trucks.

State police said a crash of more than 158 vehicles had caused a portion of the road to catch fire and destroyed a tanker truck carrying “hazardous liquid”.

Authorities said more casualties may be discovered as emergency services comb through the wreckage, with more than 25 people taken to hospital.
