Surprising reason that new Elizabeth Holmes documentary received R rating — and it’s not just for language

The new Elizabeth Holmes documentary has been rated R for more than just language.

You Can See Everything, the film on the disgraced Theranos founder that Nathan Fielder and director Lance Oppenheim have been making in secret for three years, will be released in theaters October 16.

The film’s official description reads: “Thirty-four days before she’s sent to prison, notorious Silicon Valley founder Elizabeth Holmes invites a skeptical film crew to document her every move. What begins as an intimate portrait of an enigmatic felon becomes a mind-bending three-year journey into the abyss.”

Holmes was convicted in January 2022 on four counts of fraud and conspiracy for lying about the capabilities of her biotech company’s blood testing technology and conning investors out of millions of dollars. She was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.

According to FilmRatings.com, the documentary was rated R for “language and some graphic nudity.”

So far, the trailer gives little away on what earned the film its R rating.

Released last week, the trailer saw Holmes and her husband, William Evans, being grilled by Fielder, who stayed with the couple as he captured footage of the days leading up to her going to prison.

“Does any part of you worry about me being here 24/7?” Fielder asked.

“I don’t think so,” Holmes replied.

“Well, what if I see something that makes you look bad?” Fielder prodded as Holmes smirked, remaining silent.

“Well ... isn’t your family rich?” Fielder countered, to which Evans — heir to the Evans Hotel Group — replied: “Yeah. I think there are a lot of different levels of wealth.”

In another moment, Fielder asked Evans: “You’ve never been suspicious that she’s ever lied to you?”

“No. Never,” Evans said.

Fielder told Holmes in a following scene that he had a “weird feeling there’s some things I’m not seeing.”

“It’s because I don’t have anything to hide,” Holmes replied. But Fielder didn’t appear convinced in the clip.

The closing seconds of the nearly two-and-a-half-minute trailer were a close-up on Holmes as she said: “It took me a really long time to be okay with letting someone see me cry.” A single tear rolled down her cheek.

Holmes began serving her sentence in May 2023 at a federal prison in Bryan, Texas. Her listed release date at the Federal Bureau of Prisons is currently March 19, 2032.

On Friday, Holmes posted a cryptic message on X appearing to endorse President Donald Trump after she made an official bid for a pardon. Her account retweeted a video from Trump which highlighted his administration’s achievements and added the caption: “We are winning.”

There is no evidence indicating that the Trump administration intervened in her scheduled halfway house transfer. However, Holmes formally submitted a petition for clemency to the Justice Department’s Office of the Pardon Attorney last December, which remains listed as pending.
