Most people in Germany would welcome the country's armed forces taking part in an operation to secure the Strait of Hormuz, if the ceasefire in Iran holds.
A survey conducted for public broadcaster ZDF found that 57% would welcome Germany joining other European countries in such an operation, while 38% were not in favour.
US President Donald Trump and the Iranian side signed a framework agreement on Wednesday evening which, in addition to opening the Strait of Hormuz, also provides for an end to the US naval blockade.
The survey found that 72% of supporters of the conservative bloc were in favour of a German deployment, while among people who had voted for the centre-left Social Democrats, there was 73% support.
Green Party voters were 64% in favour, while for The Left party the figure was 51%.
Supporters of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) were divided on the issue, with 46% in favour, 51% against.
The data was collected between June 16 and 18, 2026, from 1,190 randomly selected eligible voters via telephone and online.
According to the report, the findings are representative of the eligible voting population in Germany.
