Some survivors of abuse allegations at religious-run schools left Ireland ‘specifically to ‘get away from memories of sexual abuse’ the Minister for Education Norma Foley said during a press conference on 3 September 2024.

She added that the scale of abuse is ‘truly shocking’ after an inquiry revealed that nearly 2,400 allegations were recorded across 308 schools managed by religious orders in Ireland.

The report, released on Tuesday, identified 884 alleged abusers in day and boarding schools operated by 42 religious orders.
