TAWAU: Police arrested a suspected drug dealer and seized more than 80gm of syabu, estimated to be worth RM8,000, in an Ops Tapis operation at Kg Kurnia Jaya Batu 4, Jalan Apas, on Monday.
At the same time, police are now conducting operations to trace the existence of a drug trafficking network linked to the case for further investigation.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect’s arrest and seizure were carried out by a team from the Tawau Narcotics Crime Investigation Division.
“The suspect arrested was a foreigner who does not possess any identification documents and is in his 30s,” he said.
Jasmin said while police were conducting surveillance, the suspect, who was carrying a black sling bag, was seen behaving suspiciously and wandering around the vicinity.
According to him, the man attempted to flee while throwing his sling bag onto the ground as soon as he realised the presence of police before being apprehended following a struggle.
“Upon further inspection, the suspect’s bag was found to contain 15 transparent packets filled with a clear crystalline substance suspected to be syabu, weighing 83.43gm,” he said.
He said checks on past records showed the suspect had no prior criminal history, while his urine test results were negative.
The suspect is now remanded for seven days, with the case being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (for drug trafficking).
