The nation’s first professional ballet company reimagines the beloved classic with local storytelling, heritage-inspired costumes and a uniquely Malaysian setting
A beloved ballet classic is set to take on a distinctly local flavour this August as Ballet Theatre Malaysia presents Swan Lake: A Magical Tale of Malaysia, a reimagining of one of the world’s most iconic productions through a Malaysian lens.
Running from Aug 14 to Aug 16 at D Theatre Malaysia in Hextar World at Empire City, the production transforms the timeless tale of love, magic and tragedy into an enchanting story inspired by Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage.
At the heart of the ballet are the intertwined destinies of Siegfried, Odeta and Odila, whose lives are shaped by love, loss and enchantment. While retaining the essence of the original Swan Lake, the production places the narrative within a uniquely Malaysian setting through its storytelling, costumes, music and stage design.

The reimagined work is choreographed by local choreographer JS Wong, who blends classical ballet traditions with elements drawn from Malaysia’s diverse cultural landscape. The result is a performance designed to resonate with local audiences while offering international visitors a fresh perspective on Malaysia through the universal language of dance.
According to Ballet Theatre Malaysia artistic director Rachel Chew, the production celebrates the country’s beauty and cultural identity while introducing a familiar story in a new way.
As Malaysia’s first and only professional ballet company, Ballet Theatre Malaysia continues its mission of connecting internationally recognised ballet repertoire with local artistic expression. The production also features Principal Guest Artists Melissa Chapski and Sava Milojevic from Germany’s Semperoper Ballett Dresden, bringing international expertise and artistry to the Malaysian stage.
Beyond its choreography, the production places a strong emphasis on visual storytelling. Costumes draw inspiration from Malaysian heritage, incorporating traditional textures, motifs and historical influences while maintaining the elegance associated with classical ballet.

Music also plays a key role in the adaptation.
While Tchaikovsky’s celebrated score remains central to the performance, the production incorporates regional instruments to create a soundscape that feels both familiar and faithful to the original composition.
The upcoming staging represents another milestone in Ballet Theatre Malaysia’s efforts to cultivate a distinctive Malaysian voice within the world of ballet, balancing global traditions with local perspectives.
