Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has given the green light for the five members of the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) to commence their duties without waiting for the appointment of the remaining two members. This decision ensures that the crucial oversight of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) can proceed promptly. Saifuddin emphasized that the process of identifying suitable candidates for the vacant positions is actively underway and assured that the names will be unveiled at an appropriate time.
The lineup for the IPCC includes Datuk Zolkopli Dahalan as chairman, Datuk Mohamad Jazamuddin Hail Ahmad Nawawi as deputy chairman, and Martina@Kartina Zamhari, Datuk Shukri Abdullah, and Datuk Tan Kang Sai as members tasked with overseeing the conduct of the PDRM.
In a separate development, Saifuddin addressed the Cabinet's brief discussion about the pardon application by former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. He clarified that the decision regarding Najib's pardon does not fall within the Cabinet's jurisdiction but rests with the Pardons Board.
International media reports, including Channel NewsAsia, recently quoted sources indicating a reduction in Najib's 12-year sentence to six years by the Pardons Board in a meeting held the previous Monday. The sources also mentioned a reduction in the RM210 million fine, although the specific amount remained unspecified.
The ongoing appointments within the IPCC signify a commitment to establishing a robust oversight mechanism for law enforcement, ensuring transparency and accountability. As the commission prepares to carry out its pivotal role, the Home Minister's directive allows for immediate action, emphasizing the urgency of effective oversight in maintaining law and order.
Simultaneously, the distinction made by Saifuddin regarding Najib's pardon reinforces the importance of adhering to established legal procedures and the jurisdiction of relevant bodies in high-profile legal matters. These developments underscore the government's commitment to governance, transparency, and the rule of law in critical areas impacting public trust and the nation's legal framework.
