TAWAU: A 51-year-old Filipino was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to get 12 strokes of the cane for trafficking 128.86gm of syabu.
High Court Judge Datuk Dr. Lim Hock Leng meted out the sentence to Nedzmar Palaudin who was found guilty of trafficking the drug at 7am on Dec 16, 2021 along Jalan Dahlia, Lahad Datu.
The court also ordered Nedzmar to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving the sentence for deportation.
The court ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Nedzmar was charged under Section 39 B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the death sentence, or life imprisonment, with whipping, on conviction.
Counsel Darmin Achok who defended Nedzmar, asked for the life imprisonment instead of death sentence.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Hurman Hussain conducted the prosecution.
