Kota Kinabalu: A 37-year-old illegal immigrant was jailed 11 years and ordered to be given 10 strokes of the cane for having 33.24gm of Syabu.
Hasim Lak maintained his plea of guilty before Sessions Court Judge Ummu Khaltom Abdul Samad, when his case was brought up for sentencing on Wednesday.
He was found having the drug at 5.30pm on Nov 18, 2022 at a staircase of KFC Inanam Taipan, near here.
The offence under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same Act which provides for a jail between five years and life imprisonment, and whipping at least 10 strokes, on conviction.

Read more The court ordered Hasim to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest.
After completing his jail sentence, Hasim was ordered referred to the Immigration Department for deportation.
During mitigation, counsel Dominic Chew who defended Hasim, asked for leniency saying that he has a family to look after.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Suriyati Jumain urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on Hasim.
