Kota Kinabalu: A 48-year-old man was sentenced to six years and ordered to get 10 strokes of the cane for having 33.48gm of syabu.
Sessions Court Judge Ummu Khaltom Abd Samad handed the sentence to Sh Sohor Sh Sahak who pleaded guilty to the charge against him on Tuesday.
Sh Sohor was in possession of the drug at 9.15pm on May 1, 2022 by the roadside in Cenderakasih area at Metro Town, here.
The offence under Section 39A(2(r) of the Dangerous Drugs Act carries a jail of between five years and life imprisonment, and whipping at least 10 strokes of the cane, on conviction.

During mitigation, Sh Sohor who was not represented, asked for leniency saying he has eight children to look after.
“During the 13 months I was under remand, I regretted my wrongdoing and promise to not repeat the offence,” said Sh Sohor.
He informed the court that previously he was working in the peninsula and returned to Sabah during the pandemic as he did not have any job.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Hajar Mazlan urged the court to impose a heavy punishment on Sh Sohor as to give a lesson not only to him but public at large.
Siti said the offence was serious.
