KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — A multi-agency task force should be formed and a forensic audit should be launched into Lembaga Tabung Haji’s failed investments, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman proposed today.

Syed Saddiq, Muda’s sole lawmaker in the Parliament, said this was necessary since the Royal Commission of Inquiry’s (RCI) report revealed that Tabung Haji’s failed investments involved a complex network of government-linked investment companies (GLICs).

“These companies co-invest in one another and misgovernance in one GLIC leads to problems in other GLICs.

“If not handled properly, it will create (a) tsunami of misgovernance that will result in taxpayers shouldering heavy losses,” Syed Saddiq said during the debate on the Tabung Haji RCI report at the special Parliament sitting today.

Syed Saddiq was one of the few opposition lawmakers to participate in today’s session after Perikatan Nasional (PN) lawmakers staged a walkout earlier today, when their demands to postpone the special sitting were rejected.

The Muar MP also urged the government to introduce follow-up measures such as providing fiscal interventions for Tabung Haji’s reforms, expediting amendments to the Tabung Haji Act and stamp out political appointees from the pilgrim’s fund board.
