Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has shared that the legal charges he faced made him consider leaving politics altogether. The former youth and sports minister admitted that during the most difficult moments of his corruption and money laundering trial, the thought of walking away crossed his mind more than once.
However, instead of stepping back, he chose to confront the allegations head-on, determined to clear his name in court. In a recent interview, he explained that while the temptation to quit was real, his sense of duty and commitment to national service ultimately kept him going.
Syed Saddiq recalled a time in 2017 when he had been offered scholarships by Oxford University, well before he was elected as a Member of Parliament. Although the opportunity could have provided a comfortable academic path, he chose instead to stay and fight for reform and progress within Malaysia. According to him, the nation’s future always took precedence over personal ambition.
In November 2023, the Kuala Lumpur High Court had convicted him on charges that included abetting in criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of assets, and money laundering. These charges were linked to over RM1 million belonging to the Bersatu Youth wing and an additional RM120,000 related to dishonest appropriation.
However, the tide turned during the past week when the Court of Appeal unanimously acquitted him of all charges. The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to establish a solid case and that the defence should never have been called during the trial. Justice Noorin Badaruddin emphasized the lack of sufficient evidence to prove the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.
Addressing his party’s future, the former Muda president — who had temporarily stepped down from the role following his conviction — noted the unpredictability of Malaysian politics. He remarked that political alliances are fluid and often change rapidly, adding that Muda’s decisions on any future pacts would be made closer to the next general election.
Encouraging Malaysian youth, Syed Saddiq urged them not to be discouraged by political intimidation or the presence of corruption. He expressed hope that his acquittal would serve as motivation for younger generations to stand firm if they are guided by truth and integrity.
His remarks come at a moment of personal vindication, but also as a reaffirmation of his original motivation: to serve the people of Malaysia with honesty and courage.
