Kota Kinabalu: The Judicial and Legal Symposium serves as a platform to bring together legal practitioners and experts to share their views and to help explore the best approaches into strengthen the position of Syariah law in Malaysia.
General Director of the Department of Syariah Judiciary Malaysia (JKSM), Mohd Amran Mat Zain said the symposium would involve judges, prosecutors, lawyers, academics and stakeholders to combine their views and experiences from various perspectives of the implementation of Syariah law.
“The organisation of this symposium was an idea by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Musa Aman to provide an opportunity for various parties to sit together, discuss and find approaches that can strengthen the position of Syariah law.
“We are very honoured because Musa himself has provided many ideas and methods that we should explore in achieving the aspiration by placing the law in its proper and rightful position,” he said when met by the media after paying a courtesy call on Musa at Istana Seri Kinabalu here on Monday.
Mohd. Amran said the visit was also aimed to invite Musa in delivering a message and officiate the opening of the Judicial and Legal Symposium, which will be held on August 12.
Meanwhile, he said Sabah had also demonstrated its commitment to strengthening the position of Syariah law through the approval of several related enactments.
“The Enactment on the Adoption of Muslim Children was passed and came into force in December 2024, while the Muslim Inheritance Enactment was passed by the State Legislative Assembly this year.
“So these are developments that show a high level of commitment and also open up opportunities for us to continue exploring areas that can place Syariah law on the right track and ensure it is well-respected,” he said.
He said more than 600 participants were expected to attend the symposium, with the expected number of attendees continuing to increase, including participation from university students particularly those directly involved in the legal field.
Participation from various groups, especially the younger generation, helps emphasize the importance of providing exposure and broadening understanding of the position and development of Syariah law within the framework of the Federal Constitution.
Also present were Syariah Court of Appeal Judges Mohamad Shakir Abdul Hamid, Abas Nordin and Noor Hadina Ahmad Zabidi.
