Synology pushes resilient backup systems as cyber threats grow

TAIWANESE technology company Synology is urging government agencies and organizations in the Philippines to strengthen backup and recovery systems as cyber threats and demand for digital services continue to grow.

The company said the expansion of online public services under the E-Governance Act is increasing pressure on digital infrastructure as more transactions, applications and records move to shared online platforms. According to the World Bank, the number of Filipinos using digitally enabled government services is expected to increase by around 30 million between 2022 and 2026.

Claire Huang, Synology Philippines country manager, said system reliability has become critical as more citizens rely on digital government platforms for essential services.

“Because more services move online, it’s no longer just about access, but how reliable these systems are in everyday use,” Huang said. “Systems need to be secure, stable and able to handle higher demand, especially for services people rely on regularly.”

At the GOVX.0 Conference 2026, Synology discussed backup, data protection and disaster recovery strategies aimed at helping agencies maintain operations during outages or cyber incidents.

The company cited findings from the “Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2025,” which warned that ransomware, phishing, credential theft and AI-assisted cyberattacks are accelerating globally. The report said attackers are increasingly using AI for automated spearphishing, malware generation, domain impersonation and large-scale identity attacks.

Microsoft also reported that government agencies and IT organizations were among the sectors most affected by cyber threats in 2025 because they manage critical public services and large volumes of sensitive data.

According to the report, more than 40 percent of ransomware attacks now involve hybrid cloud environments, while 82 percent of observed ransomware incidents involved large-scale data exfiltration.

Huang said resilience should now be treated as a core requirement for digital governance systems.

“As the Philippines advances its digital governance initiatives, resilience can no longer be treated as a secondary consideration,” Huang said. “Government systems must be designed to handle disruptions, protect sensitive data and keep essential services available at all times.”

Synology said solutions such as ActiveProtect can help organizations standardize recovery processes, reduce manual workloads and speed up recovery during disruptions affecting essential services.
