It was recently reported that a proposal was being made to control the stability of pork prices ahead of the Chinese New Year festival season. Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub announced the matter in a Facebook post and said that he is working with Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Chan Foong Hin on the proposal.
“The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) will ensure that the food supply chain remains stable for the well-being of the people,” he stated.
As we all probably know, in Malaysia, a number of races eat pork, hence, why this matter is of utmost importance for the greater good for plenty of Malaysians.
However, it seems that not everyone sees it that way. Recently, Jabi assemblyman and Terengganu state exco Dr Azman Ibrahim found himself on the receiving end of criticism after he posted a screenshot of a Malaysiakini news article.
In the post sharing the news article ‘Cadangan Stabilkan Harga Babi Dibawa ke Kabinet Esok’ (Proposal to stabilise Pork Prices to be brought up in Cabinet tomorrow), Azman congratulated the deputy minister of Agriculture and Food Security but had apparently sarcastically said, “Congratulations Deputy Minister of MAFS Chan Foong Hin for taking a step forward to champion the plight of the Chinese.”

Many non-Muslims, including Malaysians in Sabah and Sarawak also consume pork
His post has not gone down well with Malaysians who accused him of being racist and pointing out that the Chinese are not the only ones who consume pork.
“I heard Dayak people eat more pork than the Chinese in their home meals. Do these Dayaks not deserve to have affordable/stable prices for their pork?”
Another labelled him as a racist and said that he shouldn’t be commenting on the issue in the first place as only non-Muslims eat pork.
“Let them stabilise the prices of pork, because there are Malaysians that do eat pork. What is important is that your attitude is not like a pig,” said a user.
