With the government push for sustainable development, furniture design is moving towards environmental protection, energy efficiency and resource. As such, sustainable furniture is designed and produced with a comprehensive focus on minimizing environmental impact throughout its lifecycle. So, in this context, “Sustainable Furniture” has emerged as a pivotal term reflecting a growing shift towards environmentally responsible practices. Global warming becomes an increasingly pressing concern, choosing eco-friendly furniture represents a personal commitment to environmental stewardship for many individuals. It's a practical way for people to contribute to environmental sustainability in their daily lives." (https://www.nres.gov.my/www.doe.gov.my)
I understand from eco-friendly entrepreneur Sheikh Shahril of Gelato A Lago Putrajaya that the sustainable furniture materials and interior decorations at his cafe include renewal options like reclaimed or certified plastic and wood, recycle metals, and bio-based or organic fabrics. He revealed “Waste plastics can be repurposed for furniture components, reducing the demand for new plastics. In fact, the recycled metals can be reused without losing its strength.”
Environmentally friendly Sheikh, added that “Furniture in my cafe made from recycled plastic, for example, is often weather-resistant and does not require much maintenance. Using recycled materials reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and decreases the demand for new resources. In most cases, recycled materials can be more cost-effective option compared to virgin materials. The benefits of 100% recycled material is in support of green economy.” (Instagram @gelatoalago)

As CEO of Sejahtera Leadership Initiative (SLI) & Global Sejahtera, I found the economic rationale for Gelato A Lago choosing the sustainable furniture extends beyond initial cost considerations, offering significant long-term savings. The inherent durability of these pieces means that Sheikh requires fewer replacements and repairs, presenting a cost-effective solution over time. This durability and timeless design ensure a proven valuable lasting investment.

I believe the environmentally conscious customers & students at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia where the cafe is located overlooking Marina Putrajaya will find it particularly appealing. As it align with both their human values & financial sensibility making sustainable furniture an economically wise choice. (Instagram @Heriotwattmalaysia)
