According to 造咖, a tainan engineer has been sentenced to 30 days in detention after allegedly groping his girlfriend, who subsequently reported him to the police. The case has sparked discussion on consent and personal boundaries, even within romantic relationships.
According to court documents as mentioned by 造咖 , the incident occurred last year when the engineer, identified only as Xiao Wu, visited his girlfriend, Xiao Hui, at her home in Tainan’s Shanhua District. While she was unaware, he allegedly touched her chest, making her feel violated and uncomfortable. She immediately reported the incident to the police and provided surveillance footage from her home as evidence.
According to 造咖, during the investigation, Xiao Wu admitted to the act. Prosecutors reviewed additional claims of sexual assault but determined that the encounter was a sudden, isolated act of intimate contact that did not restrict the victim’s sexual autonomy. As a result, the charge of forcible sexual assault was not pursued. Xiao Wu was instead prosecuted under Taiwan’s Sexual Harassment Prevention Act, and the case was handled through a simplified court procedure.
The Tainan District Court emphasized that consent and bodily autonomy must be respected, even between couples. The judge noted that Xiao Wu was aware that his girlfriend was not enthusiastic about sexual activity but failed to respect her boundaries, making his actions culpable. Considering that Xiao Wu is a graduate with a master’s degree, works as an engineer, has no prior criminal record, and showed remorse by admitting his actions, the court deemed his attitude partially mitigating. However, the couple has not reconciled or reached a settlement, and the victim clearly refused mediation. The court sentenced Xiao Wu to 30 days of detention, which may be commuted to a fine, and the verdict is subject to appeal.
The case highlights the importance of respecting personal boundaries in all relationships and serves as a reminder that consent is required regardless of romantic involvement.
