Taiwan’s foreign minister visits Eswatini as president’s special envoy

  • Taiwan's foreign minister, Lin Chia-lung, visited Eswatini after President Lai Ching-te's planned trip to the African nation was cancelled due to revoked overflight permits.
  • President Lai's aircraft was denied access by Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar, which Taipei alleges was due to pressure from China.
  • Mr Lin said that Taiwan would not be deterred by “authoritarian forces” and demonstrated its determination to engage with the world despite challenges.
  • China denied allegations of applying economic pressure, instead praising the three countries for upholding the ”one-China principle”.
  • The US, the European Union, Britain, France, and Germany expressed concern over the alleged blocking of the Taiwanese president's travel.
