Taiwan’s Kuenling Air is making a strategic push into Malaysia’s commercial infrastructure market, with its local agent quietly laying the groundwork for an Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) consortium involving a Bursa Malaysia Main Market-listed entity.
The entry of Kuenling brings substantial institutional weight to the proposed consortium. Established in 1977 and publicly traded on the Taiwan OTC market, the company operates as Taiwan’s largest listed central air-conditioning manufacturer, commanding a dominant 45% domestic market share. Backed by decades of strategic OEM and technology transfer partnerships with global giants such as Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Kuenling’s robust manufacturing and deployment footprint spans Taiwan, Mainland China, and Vietnam.
Sources indicate that Jide Technology (M) Sdn Bhd (“JIDE”), Kuenling’s Malaysian exclusive general agent, is currently exploring a collaboration framework with an unnamed listed partner to target the growing green building retrofit sector.
Rather than operating as a conventional equipment supplier, JIDE intends to deploy an EPC model. Under this structure, JIDE would provide Kuenling’s high-efficiency magnetic levitation (MagLev) chillers and AI-driven energy optimisation systems. The listed partner would step in to fund the upfront capital expenditure and manage the mechanical and electrical (M&E) execution. The consortium would then generate recurring income by sharing in the client’s electricity savings over a multi-year concession.
"The EPC model shifts the financial burden away from the building owner," a market observer noted. "But for the listed partner to comfortably fund the capex, the underlying technology must deliver meaningful, verifiable energy savings. That is the execution risk JIDE is trying to mitigate with Kuenling's track record."
To test the local appetite, JIDE’s Strategic Partner recently participated in the air-conditioning system upgrade tender for Senai International Airport—focusing on the EPC model. While relatively small, the tender serves as an early beachhead to introduce Kuenling’s technology to domestic infrastructure operators before scaling up to larger hospitals, shopping malls, and data centres.
Cooling systems remain the largest electricity-consuming component for commercial buildings. With Malaysian asset owners facing sustained pressure to manage rising electricity tariffs and comply with stricter ESG reporting standards, the retrofit market is expected to expand.
JIDE is slated to host a formal solutions showcase in Kuala Lumpur in June. Market watchers will be closely monitoring the event for any official unveiling of its Bursa-listed partner, which would mark the formal launch of the new EPC platform.
