KOTA KINABALU: Efforts to list Kiulu in the International Cittaslow network are expected to raise Sabah’s profile in sustainable, community-led tourism, said Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister cum Sabah Tourism Board chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.
He said Cittaslow recognition would formalise Kiulu’s existing strengths in rural tourism, improving consistency and market confidence while showcasing local culture, agriculture and natural heritage.
Joniston spoke after meeting representatives from the Malaysia Talent Education and Industry-Academia Collaboration Association, the Kiulu Tourism Association and a delegation from Nanhua University led by Assistant Professor Liang Yi-Tsung.
The Taiwan team is in Kiulu from January 10 to 19, with lecturers and students working directly with the community on workshops and on-site programmes to support Malaysia’s first International Cittaslow certification bid.
Liang said Kiulu already aligns with most Cittaslow guidelines and now needs stronger consistency and documentation, with a focus on sustainability and community economic empowerment through agriculture, nature and cultural activities.
