PAS Secretary-General Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan is expected to be appointed Malaysia’s new Opposition Leader, replacing Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, following internal discussions within the Perikatan Nasional coalition.
A senior source within Perikatan Nasional said the proposal to elevate the PN deputy secretary-general (Takiyuddin), who also currently serves as the coalition’s chief whip, was raised during a supreme council meeting on 22 February and received backing from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.
“In the PN supreme council meeting on 22 February, the matter of the Opposition Leader was raised by Bersatu.
“The PN Youth chief proposed that PN chief whip Takiyuddin be elevated as Opposition Leader. The Bersatu representative agreed.
“It was supposed to be announced together with the announcement of the PN chairman, but it was not announced by PAS,” the source said.
At present, no formal notification has been submitted to the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, meaning Hamzah, the MP for Larut, remains Opposition Leader.
Previous reports indicated that the opposition had no immediate plans to inform the Speaker of any change to the post.
Takiyuddin, a senior figure in Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), recently said that PAS was expected to assume the Opposition Leader’s position in the Dewan Rakyat, adding that the matter had been agreed in principle by the PN supreme council and that the name of the MP concerned would be announced later.
The source said he was unaware of the reason why PAS had not made a simultaneous announcement regarding the leadership change.
However, he stressed that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia had no objection in principle to PAS taking over the role.
He described the move as an opportunity to test the leadership of PN’s newly appointed chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, who is seen as having relatively limited experience in Parliament. - February 28, 2026
