Freedom of speech is a fundamental pillar of any democratic society, and it allows us as citizens to express our thoughts, ideas, and opinions openly.

It is this very freedom that nurtures a thriving marketplace of ideas, promoting intellectual diversity and progress. Stifling discussions means depriving us of our basic human rights.

However, it is crucial to acknowledge that with freedom comes great responsibility, a notion that must not be taken lightly.

While we are free to discuss any topic under the sun, there are instances when certain topics, like politics, should be broached with a degree of caution to avoid negative consequences or provoke others who may have views that are different from ours.

Recently, a kopitiam in Kedah drew attention to a sign that appeared to forbid customers from engaging in political discussions on its premises.

Uncannily, it has to happen in a state where the Chief Minister happens to be very vocal in expressing his political views on just about everything, much to the displeasure of those in the federal government.

The sign in question sparked a debate on the boundaries of free speech and the importance of holding responsible dialogue in a public place, like a kopitiam.

On the surface, it might seem that this kopitiam was stifling free speech, but the truth behind the placement of the sign provides an important lesson for everyone.

In fact, as it turns out, the presence of the signage was not intended to suppress political conversations at all.

Instead, it arose from a past incident that involved two customers engaged in a heated verbal altercation while discussing politics.

The kopitiam owner, Mr. Chen clarified that the sign was put up at the request of one of the customers involved in the unfortunate incident.

We are made to understand that this meaningful act was an attempt to prevent future confrontations and to foster a peaceful and pleasant environment for all patrons of the kopitiam.

The incident at this kopitiam highlights the need for individuals to engage in political discourse with respect and tolerance for each other.

While talking about politics can be enlightening and enriching, it can also lead to conflicts when people vehemently disagree with one another.

Under the current political climate, in Kedah especially, tempers may seem to flare easily over the slightest disagreement on just about everything in anticipation of the forthcoming state elections.

In diverse societies, varying viewpoints are inevitable, and passionate discussions can sometimes escalate into harmful confrontations. In a society as diverse as ours, it may just take a few provocative issues to make a party mad with another.

On the eve of state elections, there are many issues that may trigger anger and provoke an individual who supports an opposite party and platform.

One of the core principles of responsible dialogue is the willingness to listen to opposing views with an open mind. But not many in a heated discussion are willing to compromise.

Also, it is essential to recognize that no single perspective holds a monopoly on truth.

Engaging in constructive conversations allows us to broaden our understanding, challenge our assumptions, and identify common ground that can lead to meaningful solutions. If only we could accept the other person's reasoning carefully and rebut with facts without getting emotional.

While the kopitiam's action might be seen as an isolated incident, it serves as a reminder that responsible speech can contribute to a healthier public discourse in Kedah and in every corner of this litte country that to many seems like a universe.

Emphasizing respect, empathy, and evidence-based reasoning can elevate political conversations and foster a culture of civility that should be promoted amongst rough and ready man in the street of Kedah who seem to emulate the behaviours of their local hero, the Kedah MB.

As citizens, we have a collective duty to promote responsible speech without compromising on the freedom to express our ideas.

Society benefits from diverse viewpoints, but when discussing sensitive topics like politics, it is vital to strike a balance between freedom and responsibility. You can not just demand freedom to speak, but you also need to be responsible for what you say. The Kedah's MB recent entanglement with the law is a case in point.

We must be mindful of the impact our words can have on others and avoid incendiary language that inflames tensions rather than fostering understanding. We hope the MB reflects upon his missteps and mend his ways. However, these need not stop him from exercising his freedom of speech.

In conclusion, freedom of speech remains a fundamental right that should be safeguarded and must be cherished.

However, as demonstrated by the kopitiam incident in Kedah, there are times when exercising this right requires prudence and a sense of responsibility.

Engaging in political discussions can be a transformative experience, but it is essential to do so with empathy, respect, and a willingness to listen to others who may hold an opposite viewpoint.

By encouraging thoughtful and constructive dialogue, we can build a more cohesive society where differences of opinions are celebrated, and collective progress is peacefully achieved.

Anyway, a subtle reminder like a sign exemplified by the one in the Kedah kopitiam for patrons to be civil towards one another helps, obviously.
