TAMBUNAN: Kampung Mansarulung villagers took the initiative to organise a gotong-royong to clear litter along the roadside of their settlement, which also forms part of the main Tambunan–Keningau route.
Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Chairman Jeseelly Silvester said the effort was sparked by concern over the increasing amount of rubbish spoiling the village landscape.
“I have never seen this much litter along our road. It not only ruins the view but also threatens health and the environment.
“That is why I mobilised the community to carry out this clean-up with sincerity and responsibility,” he said.
He reminded that cleanliness reflects the community’s character and must be a continuous practice, stressing that residents should not rely solely on the authorities.
Joining the effort was Dinus Ubud, representing the Kuala Monsok Village Chief, who praised the spirit of unity shown by the villagers.
He said more important than cleaning up was the awareness not to litter in the first place, warning that unmanaged waste could lead to flash floods, mosquito breeding and habitat damage.
Village youth representative Jefley Silvester also urged the younger generation to play their part by setting a good example and initiating more environmental activities.
He noted that keeping the village clean also leaves a positive impression on road users passing through the area.
The gotong-royong saw strong participation from villagers of all ages working together to ensure their surroundings remained clean and orderly, with hopes the initiative would inspire neighbouring communities in Tambunan and Keningau.
