TAMPARULI: The Low Level Crossing (LLC) Bridge here which connects outlying areas to the town was closed at 6pm on Tuesday for structural inspection works.

The closure followed the circulation of an image of the bridge on social media accompanied by claims that subsidence had occurred.

Tuaran MP and Tamparuli Assemblyman Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, in a statement on his Facebook account, apologised for the inconvenience caused to road users.

“The bridge has been temporarily closed as a safety precaution, which remains our top priority,” he said.

Madius said he had contacted the Tuaran Public Works Department (JKR) to seek further clarification and to request immediate planning for remedial measures to ensure the bridge’s safety.

According to him, JKR informed that a technical inspection would be carried out on Wednesday, including an assessment down to the riverbed, subject to weather conditions.

“Let us hope for favourable weather throughout the inspection process,” he said, adding that updates on the actual situation would be provided on Thursday after the assessment is completed.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for JKR Tuaran District also issued a notice confirming the closure of the bridge.

As an alternative route, motorists from Tamparuli town are advised to use Jalan Bontoi Tamparuli via the Tamparuli–Ranau Road.

Road users are also urged to comply with safety signboards installed at the site to avoid any untoward incidents.

The Tamparuli LLC Bridge, also known as the Old Tamparuli Bridge, is well known for the local legend of a maiden named Solungkoi, believed by residents to have been sacrificed during ancient times.

Built during the British era in the 1930s, the bridge remains structurally significant and has become an iconic landmark and tourist attraction, often viewed from the nearby suspension bridge.
