In a recent development, former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is following through on his threat to take legal action against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for alleged slander. The decision comes after the current Prime Minister failed to produce evidence supporting his claim of having written off Felda settlers' debts and neglected to apologize to Muhyiddin.
Muhyiddin asserted that the document presented by Anwar on July 20 pertained to sukuk, a type of Islamic financial certificate, and not the Felda settlers' debts, as claimed by Anwar. He emphasized that he had consistently maintained that the document in question-related to sukuk and did not involve the disposal of the settlers' debts.
"The Finance Ministry's media release also confirmed that it is about a government guarantee of RM9.9 billion and not about disposing of the Felda settlers' debts of RM8.3 billion which I settled in 2021," stated Muhyiddin in a Facebook post.
Muhyiddin further criticized Anwar's understanding of the contents of the document he signed as Finance Minister, deeming it dangerous, as it could indicate a potential pattern of signing documents without proper comprehension during Anwar's tenure as Prime Minister and Finance Minister.
The former Prime Minister insisted that Anwar's alleged misinformation and slander made him unfit to continue governing the nation. He expressed concerns that Anwar's prolonged leadership would have negative repercussions for the people.
In response to the ongoing dispute, Datuk Dr Marzuki Mohamad, Muhyiddin's former principal private secretary, clarified that the document released by the Prime Minister's Office pertained to an agreement on the issuance of government-guaranteed sukuk and not an 80% debt waiver for Felda settlers.
Anwar, on the other hand, defended his position and urged Muhyiddin to issue an apology for the alleged slander. Anwar cited the document on the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) settlers' debts, which he signed, as evidence of the debt waiver scheme.
The controversy continues to unfold as both parties stand their ground. Muhyiddin remains steadfast in his pursuit of legal action against Anwar, while Anwar maintains that the document he presented supports his claim of having secured a debt waiver for Felda settlers. As the situation unfolds, it remains crucial for both leaders to provide transparency and clarity to the public to uphold the integrity of the nation's governance.
