Kuala Lumpur — Negaraku, Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku - this lyric represents the spirit of patriotism a Malaysian should ideally possess. However, It is no secret that many citizens do not resonate with this sentiment. They do not feel the sense of love and passion towards one’s own country, and the government believes it has a solution—one that has sparked controversies on the internet.

The ministry of education is now requiring students to wear the Jalur Gemilang badge/pin/tag on their uniform. This decision has been questioned online, particularly the financial burden it could place on working class parents. However, the government has announced that the tags will be given free to every student, with each student receiving 2 of them without having to pay. But nothing in this world is truly free, including the 2 Jalur Gemilang tags that each student will receive. It is paid for by the government, which means it is paid for using our tax money. As it is being funded by taxpayers, it is not crazy to ask if this initiative will genuinely enhance patriotism or is it just another case of government spending with questionable benefits?

I make no claims to expertise in evaluating the effectiveness of this initiative nor do I have the data to predict its success. However, I find it somehow intriguing and troubling. While others may debate on the potential outcome, the primary concern here is transparency.

There are many key questions that need answers, and they are as below:

1) Is this a well-researched strategy or simply a desperate attempt at fostering patriotism?

  • Of what study and research did the government base this initiative on?
  • Were there any pilot programs or prototype experiments that yielded any significant result?
  • Do the decision makers actually believe that this is a solid plan or are they grasping at straws?

2) How much does this scheme cost, and who profits from it?

  • What are the total expenditures, and who are the suppliers?
  • Were these badges procured through an open tender or direct negotiation process?
  • How much does each badge cost compared to market prices?
  • Will there be public disclosure of the financial breakdown of this initiative?

As much as I would like to give the government the benefit of the doubt, it is difficult to do so from our past experiences. There may be certain individuals amongst the rank may have vested interest in this initiative aiming to profit at the expense of taxpayers. Meanwhile the opposition isn’t doing any help either, instead of playing their role as check and balance on the government, they are busy playing politics, religious and racial rhetoric over real accountability.

Thus, It is our responsibility as citizens of Malaysia to demand transparency in the government. Is this an act of promoting patriotism, or an act to benefit cronies? I sincerely hope that there are no hidden agendas behind this initiative, but the rather sudden announcement leaves many questions unanswered.

Patriotism should be cultivated, not commodified.
