PENAMPANG: Upko President Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau has decided not to defend his party position for the upcoming term allowing Vice President Datuk Ewon Benedick to lead the party.

Tangau said Upko needs to formulate a new strategy to continue to fight for the interests of the people in this uncertain political situation.

"For that, Upko will highlight a new line of leadership with a fresh perspective, and always stick to the basic principles of the party's struggle," Madius told a media conference here Wednesday.

"This decision has been agreed upon and a consensus has been reached to be implemented after assessing the level of readiness of the new leader chosen to shoulder the responsibility of leading Upko. I hereby decide not to defend the position of President of Upko for the upcoming term.

"With this, I would like to announce that the new Upko President will be led by the Vice President who is also Kadamaian Assemblyman, Datuk Ewon Benedick."
