LABUAN: A tanker found to have committed five offences was detained by the Labuan Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) at noon on Wednesday.
Labuan MMEA Deputy Director (Operations), Maritime Commander Mohd Hafiz Abd Mutalib said their patrol boat, KM Bistari, was carrying out routine inspections on Malaysian registered tankers.
He said several offences under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 were found in the 1pm incident about 25 nautical miles northwest of Labuan.
“The ship failed to display insurance, Port Clearance and valid crew list documents.
“During inspections, the ship involved was operated by a ship captain with seven crew from Malaysia, the Philippines and Myanmar aged between 21 and 47.
“The captain and chief engineer failed to display valid competency and qualification documents. As a result, the ship, the captain and all the crew were arrested and taken to the Labuan Maritime Zone for further investigation,” he said.
The case is investigated under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.
