An explosion has occurred on a tanker off the coast of Oman following a suspected Iranian attack.
The captain reported the explosion on the hull of the vessel, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced on Tuesday.
The crew is safe, but fuel has leaked and spilled into the sea, the maritime organization said. Vessels in the vicinity have been advised to navigate the area with caution.
As the explosion occurred near the waterline, it could have been caused by an attack using a drone boat or a limpet mine attached to the hull.
Ships in the Strait of Hormuz and adjacent waters have been attacked on several occasions since the start of the Iran conflict three months ago.
As the strait is effectively closed to shipping, around 22,500 seafarers aboard more than 1,550 merchant ships are currently stranded in the Gulf, according to US figures.
