Targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol expected by mid-year, says minister

THE government is expected to implement the targeting of RON95 petrol subsidies by mid-year, with the best mechanism to be identified to ensure the benefits reach the targeted groups.

Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, said the government is now in the final phase of drafting a fair and effective targeting system to ensure its implementation meets the set objectives.

According to him, the government also assures that this subsidy targeting will not cause uncontrolled price increases in goods and services.

"At this time, the target group that will use the subsidised fleet card is being identified through discussions between KPDN, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Transport, specifically the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD)," he said in a written reply to Hassan Abdul Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang).

Hassan had asked KPDN to explain whether the implementation of targeted RON95 petrol subsidies in the middle of this year would cause an increase in the prices of goods and the cost of living.

Armizan emphasised that RON97 petrol is not included in the subsidy targeting because it has been floated since June 2018.

He also explained that providing subsidised petrol to the right target group can maintain service costs and the delivery of essential goods to the people, thereby preventing an increase in the cost of living.

In an effort to curb price manipulation of goods KPDN will enhance enforcement through the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Regulations 2018. – February 27, 2025
