Safiq Rahim, the former captain of the National football team and Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) player, found himself in a harrowing situation as he became the latest victim of attacks targeting Malaysian footballers. This alarming trend marks the third incident within a week, raising concerns about the safety of athletes both on and off the field.
The incident involving Safiq Rahim occurred as he was driving his Honda Civic along Jalan Sri Gelam. Two suspects on a motorcycle abruptly closed in on his vehicle, with one of them wielding a hammer. Without warning, the assailant struck Safiq's rear windscreen, shattering it in a terrifying display of aggression.
In his police report filed at the Larkin police station, Safiq detailed the ordeal that unfolded around 10:05 pm on the previous day. He recounted the moment when the two perpetrators approached his car, their intentions veiled in menace. Despite the shock of the attack, Safiq managed to bring his car to a halt, only to find himself confronted by the menacing sight of the hammer-wielding assailants gesturing towards him. Reacting swiftly, Safiq reversed his vehicle, prompting the attackers to flee the scene. However, the damage was done, as his rear windscreen lay shattered, a stark reminder of the danger he had narrowly escaped.
This incident follows closely on the heels of two other disturbing attacks on National footballers. Just days prior, Faisal Halim, a National striker, fell victim to a vicious acid attack at a shopping mall in Kota Damansara, Selangor. The assailants' cowardly act left Faisal with severe fourth-degree burns, necessitating urgent medical intervention. Similarly, Muhammad Akhyar Abdul Rashid, currently playing for Terengganu FC, was targeted by unknown assailants in Kuala Terengganu. Akhyar endured a violent assault that left him with injuries to his head and body, underscoring the grave risks faced by athletes in their daily lives.
These incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the vulnerability of athletes to senseless acts of violence. As the football community grapples with the aftermath of these attacks, calls for enhanced security measures and greater vigilance resonate more strongly than ever. Beyond the football pitch, there is an urgent need to address the underlying issues contributing to such acts of aggression, ensuring the safety and well-being of athletes across the nation.
