Tawau cops hunting man who flees with RM284k

TAWAU: Police are tracking down a man suspected of fleeing with nearly RM300,000 in cash from a vehicle around 1.39pm on Tuesday at Taman Megah Jaya here.

Tawau Acting District Police Chief Supt Champin Piuh said the car break-in and theft took place in the parking area in front of the Borneo Bird’s Nest premises.

“The complainant discovered RM284,146 in cash missing from the car after noticing the left window had been smashed,” he said.

Champin said the complainant realised the theft after checking the vehicle and found that a black Dunhill-branded bag containing RM230,000 in cash was missing.

He added that further inspection revealed foreign currency, 100,000 Hong Kong dollars, which had also been kept in the same vehicle was gone and is believed to have been stolen.

“CCTV footage showed the movements of an unidentified man driving a grey Perodua Bezza, who was seen breaking the window of the vehicle.

“After smashing the window, the suspect was seen entering the car and fleeing with the bag containing the money,” he said.

He added that the investigation is ongoing, including efforts to track down the suspect. The public with any information are urged to contact the police to assist in the investigation.

Police have opened an investigation paper under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft from a motor vehicle, which carries a sentence of up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both, if convicted.
